In uncertain times we can turn to fear, we can shut down and freeze.

Or we can see possibilities and opportunities. It all comes down to cultivating the right mindset.

On the go? Here’s 30 seconds of take outs:

  • Uncertainty is the only certain thing in life. How we respond to it and the decisions we make along the way determine our success.
  • Developing the right mindset and holding a positive vision for the future can help guide us through uncertain times.
  • Changing the way you think and talk is the path to developing a mindset that will help you succeed.

There’s one thing I know for certain – nothing is certain. Life is full of surprises, there are turns and twists, many ups and downs on life’s road.

People can surprise us in good and bad ways, they try to do their best, but sometimes things don’t go to plan.

What I believe is that where we are at in this moment is exactly where we are meant to be. All of the decisions we’ve made up to this point have led us right to where we are now.

Rarely could someone say “how did I get here?” and be unable to trace back the decisions that have led them to here.

The secret to getting where you want in life, I believe, is to make the right decisions (both big and small) every single day.

The right mindset

That old saying ‘life is 20% of what happens to us and 80% how someone responds’ comes to the forefront of my mind when I think about the mind set needed to achieve our goals.

How do you develop the right mind set so you create the right conditions for good decisions?

One of the key ingredients is seeing things differently.

How do we perceive the world around us? Perception creates the picture in your mind, looking at a situation in a different way opens us up to new possibilities.

Viewing uncertainty through a new lens

How does one maintain a positive mindset in uncertainty?

Uncertainty might cause many property investors to hold back or freeze. But uncertainty can also be used to your benefit.

Instead of seeing uncertainty as a threat or something to be afraid of, can we change our perception so we see that uncertain times are full of new opportunities?

This is the entrepreneurial spirit!

As Forbes magazine says ‘entrepreneurial spirit is a mindset. It’s an attitude and approach to thinking that actively seeks out change, rather than waiting to adapt to change. It’s a mindset that embraces critical questioning, innovation, service and continuous improvement’.

Let uncertainty become your ally, not your enemy.

Visualising a future full of possibility

The decision-making process can be enhanced through the ability to visualise. Vision is more than just physical sight; it is the ability to imagine in our minds what lies beyond, what is possible.

What do we visualise for the future?

There is a proverb that goes ‘guard your heart more than anything else, because the source of your life flows from it’. What is in your heart flows the river of your life. The mind’s eye, our imagination, shapes how and what we see.

This is why two people looking at the same situation can see wildly different things. One might see obstacles and impossibility, the other possibility and opportunity.

Checking in

Check in with yourself. Where is your mindset at right now?

What we think about the most becomes our dominant reference point. Check in on what your stories are right now because our brains are really good at deleting, distorting and generalising information to fit our reference points.

This is what’s known as a META MODEL.

Change how you think by changing how you talk

We can influence how we think, feel, and act through our self-talk, our dialogue with others, noticing the generalisations we make, the details we leave out, or the way we distort through our language.

When aware we can see the impact of generalisation, deletion and distortion in everyday life.

The easiest way to tackle this is changing your language for results. The power of words is  like a double-edged sword they can be used to inspire, build up and edify or they cut a person down and destroy.

Your language choice exemplifies your values and beliefs. By paying close attention to your language choice and the language of others, you gain an insight to underlying values and beliefs.

You can use language to empower or disempower. Generalisations, deletions and distortions can work for or against you. Learn to pay attention to how your language or the language of others has an impact.

Take action

Here are a few simple ways to begin to change your mindset and make uncertainty your ally:

  • Be careful of what you put in your mind and the type of media you consume.
  • Choose wisely the people you associate with.
  • Understand basic human psychology to better understand yourself and create space for awareness and improvement.
  • Change your language. Your language impacts how you think, feel and behave. We all have choices over our language. Change your language, change your results.
  • Change the stories you tell yourself to influence your emotions.

It takes a different mindset to be successful in a specific endeavour. Where you might find plenty of people with natural talents or gifts it’s harder to find those who are truly successful.

Surround yourself with people, read books and continuously search and brainstorm to reprogram your brain to think in a way that will help you identify opportunities and develop these opportunities with speed and research-fuelled confidence.
